Building Medical Journal Capacity in Africa
The National Library of Medicine (NLM), on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, has been a center of information innovation since its founding in 1836. The world’s largest biomedical library, NLM maintains and makes available a vast print collection and produces electronic information resources on a wide range of topics that are searched billions of times each year by millions of people around the globe. It also supports and conducts research, development, and training in biomedical informatics and health information technology. In addition, the Library coordinates a 6,500-member National Network of Libraries of Medicine that promotes and provides access to health information in communities across the United States.
Counter Tools: Empowering Communities to Become Healthier Places
Counter Tools is a nonprofit organization with a mission to empower communities to become healthier places. Based in Carrboro, North Carolina, Counter Tools works with partners across the country to advance place-based public health and equity through policy, systems and environmental changes. Through training, technical assistance, mission-driven software tools, a podcast, a webinar series, and the website CounterTobacco.org, Counter Tools disseminates science and best practices, connects experts, partners and advocates, and develops resources and communication tools for communities working on place-based public health initiatives as a step toward achieving health equity.
Counter Tools is best known for its work on healthy retail environments, especially with tobacco retail environments. The Counter Tools team empowers partners and their stakeholders to survey and monitor tobacco, alcohol, and food in the retail environment. Counter Tools provides expert guidance and recommendations to collect data and build local and state capacity to facilitate policy change.

Participatory Visual Methods in Health: Engage, Empower and Educate
PhotovoiceWorldwide LLC’s mission is to help individuals and organizations around the world use photovoice safely, ethically, and successfully. We facilitate Photovoice training and professional development, foster a community of peer-support and ongoing learning, provide consulting services, and offer Photovoice products. In this presentation, Laura Lorenz, PhD, MEd, Co-founder and Educator at PhotovoiceWorldwide describes her path to Photovoice and reviews participatory visual methods (Photovoice and photo interview), their processes and benefits, and the ways they engage, empower and educate. And she describes the work of PhotovoiceWorldwide.
Our foundations course, ‘Talking with Pictures’: Photovoice is offered online multiple times per year, at timings convenient for different time zones around the globe. The course provides tools and hands-on experience with Photovoice steps. By the end of the course learners have the knowledge and experience needed to develop a Photovoice Plan for their project. Continuing education contact hours are available for 4 clinical disciplines. Over 150 people from 16 countries have participated in our foundations course since 2018.
PhotovoiceWorldwide also provides consulting services in Photovoice for evaluation, and Photovoice project design, facilitation, and outreach. We can collaborate with you to develop tailored Photovoice trainings. And we are developing new online courses, including Photovoice for Evaluation and Approaches to Visual Data Analysis.

The National Network of Depression Centers - India Foundation (NNDC-IF)
The National Network of Depression Centers- India Foundation (NNDC-IF) is a non-profit organization, established in New Delhi, India, and Chicago, IL that focuses first and foremost on increasing mental health education and awareness to eradicate the stigma of mental illness. It was founded by Dr. Murali Rao, MD, Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry, Loyola University Chicago, to improve the quality of life of the Indian population affected by mental illness. NNDC-IF intends to improve the lives of those affected by focusing on creating scientific awareness amongst healthcare professionals and the society through their Behavioral Health Training Program (BHTP).
NNDC-IF was inspired by and modeled on its American counterpart, the National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC). Established in 2008, NNDC is a non-profit consortium of 25 leading clinical and academic institutes in the United States which aims to establish research centers through partnership programs, advance scientific research, and provide stigma-free care.
Ultimately, NNDC-IF’s mission is to use the power of its worldwide network to act as a unified platform to bring collaborative and innovative mental health education and awareness to the Indian population. This network includes medical colleges, hospitals, clinics, clinicians, and mental health organizations. Their current partners include institutions such as NNDC, NNDC- India Alliance (Chicago), The Pranab Mukherjee Foundation, The University of Delhi, Sikkim University, Workplace Mental Health, Mental Health First Aid, Hopeful Minds, and the APA Foundation. Additionally, NNDC-IF has members hailing from renowned Indian institutions such as AIIMS Delhi, NIMHANS, PGIMER, RMLH, and VIMHANS. Together, they will address the gaps in mental health care, education, and research.
The Role of Advocacy in Achieving Health for All: Lessons from the Global Health Advocacy Incubator
The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) supports civil society organizations who advocate for public health policies that reduce death and disease. We bring a proven advocacy approach and a global network of local partners, built on a 20-year track record of success across multiple issues in more than 50 countries.
GHAI builds local partner capacity to lead and sustain policy advocacy. We provide our partners with direct, systematic, ongoing technical assistance and capacity-building support. We capture best practices that can be shared with partners, within and across issues and countries, to continuously improve our approach.
